Mercury warning!

Because everyone is now being urged left and right to buy “green” CFL bulbs I wanted to link to this article: CFL Bulbs Have One Hitch: Toxic Mercury that I think everyone should read.

My sister first told me about the bulbs having mercury in them at dinner last night. She has a friend who put one in her daughter’s room, it broke, and she heard about the mercury and called a government agency to find out what to do…her daughter’s room has had to be sealed off from the rest of the house and it is going to cost them $2,000 to have the room properly treated to get rid of the mercury!

We have put one of these bulbs in the fixture on our front porch, but no other’s so far. I have to say, I don’t think I’ll be installing any others, even though I’d like to save the planet as much as the next mom, that is until I get some more information that convinces me otherwise.

Let’s Get Real Monday…

Let's Get Real Monday Logo

Randi is having another Let’s Get Real Monday (love the logo!) and I’m in, even though I’m almost late! The topic this time is “My Favorite Things”.

I think that anyone who reads my blog knows that my favorite things are not only my family, but PICTURES of my family! So here are a few of my favorites to celebrate!

Okay…I sure hope that you don’t have dial-up, if you do you are probably really mad at me right now! I had to stop myself at those, go and peruse my flickr site if you must see more, but I’m guessing I probably did you in already. :-)

New recipe…

I just came up with this recipe tonight, after rummaging around the fridge, hoping to find something to throw together dinner, out of things we already had lying around. It has butter…so not fat-free or anything! :-)

3 zucchini’s cut into wedges

2 cups green beans

1 can of tuna packed in spring water

2 tsp. fresh basil (chopped)

juice from half of small lemon

1/4 cup of butter

salt to taste

1/4 cup of whatever cheese you have on hand

Saute’ it all (except the cheese) up in a pan until the zucchini and green beans are almost tender. Then I transferred it over to a corning ware dish and sprinkled the cheese on top and baked it at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. If you don’t like tuna, it would be awesome with chicken, and grilled chicken would be even better! I just didn’t happen to have any chicken. I think I need to go grocery shopping!

It only fed the four of us, so you’ll need to double it if you have a larger family! We thought it was very yummy, and Hubby even wished there was more!

Sunday…

Always Sail, Never Drift by Oliver Wendall Homes

“I find the great thing in this world is not so much where
we stand
as in what direction we are moving;
To reach the port of heaven, we must sail
sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it,
but we must sail,
and not drift, nor lie at anchor.”

It Is Well with My Soul by Horatio G. Spafford

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way
when sorrows like sea billows roll;
whatever my lot thou hast taught me to say,
“It is well, it is well with my soul.”

It is well
It is well
with my soul;
with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet
though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control,
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and has shed his own blood for my soul.

It is well
It is well
with my soul;
with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.

My sin O the bliss of this glorious thought!
my sin, not in part, but the whole
is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more;
praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well
It is well
with my soul;
with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.

O Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend,
“Even so” it is well with my soul.

It is well
It is well
with my soul;
with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.

This is my very favorite hymn! I have found peace and solace in it countless times, in my walk with God, through this life.

Gratuitous Kid Pic Friday

I am makin’ up my own little thing for Friday. :-) There are just so many pictures that I want to share!

This picture is of Joshua hanging out with our dog Zoey. Joshua loves Zoey, Zoey puts up with Joshua. :-) Josh doesn’t love Zoey because he is a dog lover, or because he likes to hug and cuddle with her. Nope, he has alterior motives! Yes, Joshua! The reason that he can often be seen this close to Zoey is really because he loves to rake her fur with his fingers, which are wet from being in his mouth, and get all the hair that he can on them and then put it in his mouth! You probably find that disgusting, but Joshua thinks it’s…OH SO YUMMY!  In fact, he is the only person in the family that is happy that Zoey sheds, what seems like a whole ‘nother dog each day!

Works for me Wednesday…

Joshua loves to look at his board books, but does not have the fine motor skills yet to turn the pages. I tried one of these clips on a page first to see if it would work for him and sure enough he started turning away! So then I just took clothespins and a hot glue gun and staggered the pins so that he could get to all of the pages. He likes being able to look at his book now whenever he wants to and not have to wait on Mama or Sissy to look at it. This would be great for lots of little
ones to use before they get their fine motor skills honed.

Go over to Shannon’s Rocks In My Dryer to see more “Works For Me Wednesday” tips!
